Different Approaches To Collecting Data

There are many different ways in which information can be collected, some are good and some are not so good. However there are two main types of research that can be done and that are effective.

Qualitative Data:
This meathod of research helps you to gain a deeper understanding of how people think towards specific things.

Quantitative Data:
This refers to data that uses numerical values to analyse results.

I will be using Qualitative data for my research as its an easier way to get information quickly and provides a deeper responce as opposed to using numbers. I am yet to decide on the questions that i will be asking but when i have then i will be posting both the questions and results on here.

NME Magazine Analysis

NME is a magazine that generally targets both male and female teenagers, this is suggestede through the use of both male and female artists on the front cover and the neutral colour schemes used throughout.
On the cover of this magazine we see that the main image is of lilly allen, i think she is being used because lilly allen is seen to be the stereotypical teenage "emo" type of person. By using her on the cover it creates familarity and a connection with the target audience and the magazine therefore they would be more inclined to buying it.

There are many conventions shown in the front cover and colour in particular has been used effectively to create continuity. Red and Balck are colours that are used to connect the clothing that she is wearing with the colours of the text. The yellow contrasts the dark colours and provides an eye catching effect.
Pull quotes are also used to attract people to buy the magazine.
NME generally costs £2.20

Above is The front cover of NME.

CONTENTS PAGE

In general contents pages need to be simple and easy to read and thats what NME contents page is like. It uses a minimal amount of colour to keep it simple, however the colours that it does use are the same as the front cover which further extends the continuity of the magazine. The large image of Astoria indicates that it is significant as it takes up most of the page space. it also appears on the front cover. The contents page layout is very clear and the subheadings divide the magazine in to sections. they make each topic stand out because of the big black boxes. The numbers are in Red and stand out next to the black text making it a lot easier to read.

 DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

We see the headline of the article first as it is quite large and stands out, it is also in the same font style as the front cover which also shows contunuity within the magazine. The image is one the right hand side of the double page spread and takes up most of the right hand side, this is effectiive because not only does it highlight the importance of the image due to its size but it also leaves a lot of the left page to work with.
This page is also set out in a simple but effective way, the text in on one side and the image on another.

By analysing the cover, contents and double page spread of this magazine it has helped me to further understand the importance of continuity throughout the magazine and the amount of thought that needs to be put in when i come to creating my own magazine.

Rock Sound magazine

" ONE.BILLION.LISTENS"- SKRILLEX.

I chose the magazine Rock Sound as I wanted to explore a Genre of music which i wasnt familar with. I learnt a great deal about the conventions of Rock music and gained an idea of what a typical reader may be like.

Whilst reading the magazine i found an article that related to the cover story which raised an interesting topic.
The article spoke about how the music industry was changing in terms of how to gain succession, it stated that technology has played a major part in getting new artists known to the public. It also highlighted the fact that the internet in particular provides a strong platform to showcase new talent. Youtube has been the main way in which new performers spread their videos in the hope that one day they will gain recognition, youtube has also made it possible for individuals to "make it big" in the industry without even being part of any record labels.

One person in particular reaped in the benefits of social media, SKRILLEX also known as Sonny Moore has become a viral sensation for Rock lovers on youtube. He initially started off by mixing songs and making his own dub step and electro house versions to already exsisting songs. This proved to be very successful and within a few months he had acomplished many veiws. He himself said "One.Billion.Listens" he was refering to the fact that the daily veiwship on youtube is so exceedingly high that it would be correct to assume that it is an affective way of reaching sucess when starting from scratch.

From reading this article i have come to realise how important other forms of media are and how the industry is changing due to the advances in modern technology. Many of the current influencial artists have derived from the internet and youtube in particular and artists like Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black (although from different genres) have made their claim to fame by platforms of social media like Youtube.

Magazine Evaluation

After hours of hard work and perseverance I am relieved to have finished my magazine cover and contents page. I have quickly come to realise that media studies isn’t as easy as I had imagined.

This task has been extremely challenging as before the course I hadn’t a clue on how to use Photoshop and now I feel that I have come to grips with the basics of how to edit things on my own accord. My Photoshop skills have improved immensely even though there is much yet to be learnt. I found the layers very confusing and lost parts of my work many times and cutting out images proved to be slightly challenging. I have improved on my photography skills as well, seeing as before I couldn’t focus images correctly and now I feel quite confident taking a range of different shots. I feel as if I had more experience and more time I could have produced a better magazine.

My final magazine and contents changed a lot from my flat plan because i now realise that sometimes when you thing of an idea on paper the execution of it may not be as easy or simple as it seemed, and that sometimes your mind changes according to accessibility of objects or time restraints. My flat plan was an image of a female sixth former in the foreground with blurred background scenery, this then changed to an image of a male sixth former holding a camera in his face in the foreground with blurred outdoor scenery in the background. I tried hard to make the flat plan idea work but I found it hard to take a good shot that I was happy to use.
There were a lot of restrictions and restraints I faced whilst trying to capture my images such as
·         Time- this limited me because the people that i used as my models had other lessons to go to.
·         Lighting- some days the lighting was good because of the sunshine whereas some days the lighting was more dull
·         Photoshop- some of the ideas I thought of weren’t possible to be carried out.

Overall i feel as if this prelim task has helped me to gain an understanding of my ability and where i stand in terms of using the software and programs that i hadn’t previously used. I was pleased with the outcome of my work to some extent however i feel as if i could have done a lot better if i had some more time.
Above is a copy of my final magazine cover.
This what my contents page looked like.
