Ripped Paper Effect

Below is a video I used from youtube which helped me create a ripped effect which you can see on the double page spread

Double Page Spread- Design ideas

I wanted to have a rose or plant to make it look like it was growing up the page, this is because I wanted to create a link between her name "ROSE ROCK" and the double page spread, however when I looked at the image closer I thought it didnt look right

The Process

The image above shows what idea I previously had. I thought that it would be more visually appealing however I soon realised that there wouldnt be enough space to add in sufficient content. Eventhough I prefer my intial design I feel as if the Contents page I have now fits the conventions more appropriately

My Finished Product

This is my front cover; I think that its improved immensely from the preliminary task and it looks like a real a real front cover. It has followed the conventions of a typical magazine as it has a large masthead, a plug, a strong image and a coherent colour scheme. I have made many changes to the image as well, the colours of the models eyes were previously blue, the rose was previously purple and the picture has also been brightened.
The contents page has also developed a lot in terms of the progression from the prelim to now. I feel as if the layout is clearer cut and looks a lot better than my prelim contents. It also now includes an editor’s letter which makes the whole page look more authentic. My contents has sections so that it is easier to read.
The double page spread is what I found hardest to do; this is because it was harder to fill the spaces. I decided for the artist to hold her own pull quote. I felt that it was more creative than simply having a plain image on the right page. I used a variety of different tools such as adjusting brush levels to create a ripped effect.

My Flat Plans

My front cover will hopefully look like the scamp above. I plan on using a fuzzy font to reflect the rock sort of genre. A plug is added to attract my audience and the image of the artist will be the most prominant feature. I feel as if this scamp looks effective and if I stick to it then ill have a good outcome.

This is my contents page, it follows the conventions of a real contents page so I hope to stick with this style.

My double page spread is what I found most challenging to design due to the vast amount of space I had to work with. Eventually i ended up sticking with a simplistic idea.

Shot List

Above is a scan of my shot list. I chose to have the guitar shot as I plan to edit the image and place the text for my double page spread in the guitar. the second image I chose to plan was on with my model siting against a wall with a guitar in her hand, I did this because I wanted her to look as if she was leaning on the page which could be an effect image. Another image which I find eye catching is the model looking in to a mirror with her reflection thats different looking back at her, this will emphasise her change of character.

Shot List

FRONT COVER

For my front cover I'll be using a medium long shot image. my model will incorperate black in her clothing to match the colour scheme of the magazine. Her angle of gaze will be towards the reader as it builds a connection between the reader and the magazine. The only effect that will be used is possibly blurring of the background.

CONTENTS PAGE

For my contents page i will use a long shot, this is because i want a full body shot of my model so you can get a feel of the genre throught her clothing and body language, she will be at the edge of the image so that i can place it at the edge of the contents page.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

For the double page spread im planning on having my model shot from a high angle when sitting against a wall, the setting has to be dark and the colours should be muted to create a sense of mystery and isolation. The model will have to be wearing different clothing.

Magazine Title

FUSE

I may use this title as the verb fuse means to blend or join to form a single entity and the noun fuse is a metal strip that breaks a circuit, similarly my magazine is trying to blend two genres and breaking the way that they are group together.

I also have other ideas for my title

Unplugged
Rock Block
Ignite

I will be choosing one of the titles above for my magazine.

Reader Profile

Skye is 17 and is currently doing her A-levels, She is studying Media, Drama, Music and English literature.
She is a loud and outgoing person who enjoys going to music gigs in her free time, her approach to life is laid back and care free, however she takes her education seriously and aims to go on to university.
She has always loved indie music but has recently found a new liking for the alternative rock genre as they both embed elements of her personality. Her preference in music artists range from the likes of Ed Sheeran to Fall out boy to Coldplay!
She feels as if there arent any magazines that cater for the contrasting genres she listens to, my magazine is created to bridge this gap in the market as theyre isnt a magazine on the market that is made for Alternative rock with elements of indie influence.

Results from my questionnaire

I wanted to do some market research before I decided on what kinds conventions I'd use in my magazine.
These were the questions I asked:
  • What Colour scheme do you think works best for an Alternative Rock magazine?
  • How much would you be prepared for a Rock magazine?
  • What do you think is the most important feature of a magazine cover?
  • What do you prefer, long articles or shorter one?
I asked these questions because I believe that I will benefit from them and I'll be able to apply the results of them when making decisions about my own magazine.

1) What Colour scheme do you think works best for an Alternative Rock magazine?

2)  How much would you be prepared for a Rock magazine?

 3) What do you think is the most important feature of a magazine cover?

4) What do you prefer, long articles or shorter ones?

After conducting this Questionnaire I have developed a better understanding of what the market requires, it will also help me to make decisions on whether or not to pursue the ideas that I have.

Semiotics within magazines

Semiotics refers to when the text on a magazine ties in with the image on it.

When this picture is seen on its own it seems rather weird in a sense that one of the boys is embracing the other. They both have awkward expressions on their faces. On looking solely on the image its hard to decipher what the magazine entails and what relevance it has to alternative rock music.

When the text is put over the top of this image we see how the text has made the image make sense. It says “rocks odd couple” which immediately makes the awkward positioning and facial expressions gain purpose.

Also the colours that the models are wearing tie in with the colours of the text.
